Drop - in Centre

The BECC staff meets Street Children in an outreach program and invites them to the Drop-In Centre. Here they are given a meal and offered facilities to bathe and wash their clothes. They are encouraged to speak out their problems and given a sympathetic listening ear. Should they want to stay, these children are referred to the BECC Shelter. The Drop-In Centre is open from 10am to 1pm. The children are introduced to cleanliness and non-formal education.

Nursing Room

BECC has the credit of being the first of its kind to have a nursing room for street children in Mumbai. Children between the ages of 8 to 20 years are admitted into the nursing home. Street children hurt in accidents, suffering from TB, skin or other diseases are brought to the nursing home by our staff or sent to us by NGOs. Here they are cared for, given nutritious food and enough rest. They are introduced to a non-formal education including cleanliness, art and craft. The nursing room can accommodate 8 children at a time.

Shelter

BECC has 2 shelters: one at Sai Kripa and the other at Khar Pipeline with a capacity of 50. A time table is strictly adhered to in order to discipline these children and reintegrate them into the mainstream of the society. They are given food, education and individual counseling. Various other activities ensure the children's psycho-socio development.

Vocational Training

The older children are sent to various institutions for vocational training like Screen printing, Carpentry, Plumbing and Wiring. Currently 10 children are being vocationally trained.

Traffic Assisting

At present 10 of our street children have been trained by the Traffic Police and are assisting at traffic signals under the supervision of a Traffic Constable. They receive a stipend of Rs. 300/- per month. The work has been appreciated by the Traffic Police.

Counselling

This is given top priority. The street children are helped to come to terms with their fears, hopes and dreams and also encouraged to reunite with their families.
